Role Overview & Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the SLT team within the Access to Communication & Technology (ACT) Service.

ACT is a specialist electronic assistive technology service based in Selly Oak, Birmingham and covering the West Midlands region.

We are commissioned by NHS England to provide specialist assessment of children and adults who require Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) and/or Environmental Control (EC)

We are a friendly, enthusiastic, experienced and supportive team who work collaboratively.

Applicants should have significant experience in AAC post-qualification within at least one of these areas:

  • Paediatrics
  • People with Neurological Conditions
  • People with Learning Disabilities
The post-holder will provide a clinical expert role in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) at a Specialist Regional (Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust and the West Midlands) AAC Service through assessment, advice, support and training. This expertise is carried out directly with the clients and through their local team (consisting of professionals from Health, Education and Social Services, voluntary and private sectors, their friends, family and carers).

The post holder will

Use highly developed Speech and Language Therapy skills alongside occupational therapy (OT) and Clinical Science (CS) staff within the interdisciplinary team assessing people referred to the service with AAC needs, in accordance with the ACT AAC clinical competencies. This will involve developing a deeper understanding of the scope of both SLT and CS, in order to apply this knowledge to provide comprehensive, holistic assessments.
  • Work as an autonomous practitioner, in accordance with the ACT clinical competencies, carrying a caseload of people referred to the service for assessment of communication needs
The line management of the Rehabilitation Assistant (Band 4) and Clinical Support Officer (Band 3). This will include day to day supervision, setting objectives and priorities, monitoring/reviewing performance and conducting appraisals.
