Role Overview & Responsibilities

Through sharing the wisdom of own lived experience, the PSW will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others. Within a relationship of mutuality, they facilitate and support information sharing to promote choice, self-determination and opportunities for the fulfilment of socially valued roles and connection to local communities.

The PSW will take a lead role in embedding recovery values within the service setting in which they work, alongside peer mentor support workers from other agencies in the Addictions field and act as an ambassador of recovery for the Addictions Directorate with external agencies and partner organisations.

An opportunity has arisen to join the Alcohol Liaison Team as an In reach Peer Support Worker , based at West Middlesex University Hospital

The Alcohol Liaison Team will consist of a small team of specialist nurses, alcohol recovery worker and peer support worker working across A&E, all wards and department of Hospital. The service will be operated 7 days a week Monday to Sunday 07:00-10:00, with a view to increasing to 7 days. You will be expected to be able to work autonomously within this small team, and also in partnership with the wider MDT, Community Substance Misuse Services, A&E and GP’s. The team provides clinical expertise and knowledge relating to the identification, assessment, treatment including alcohol detox , and management of patients attending or admitted to West Middlesex University Hospital with Alcohol-use Disorders or alcohol related harm.

The successful applicant should be highly motivated in working with this patient group and have an interest in developing their skills further in this specialized field. They should be able to work as an independent practitioner and have excellent communication and time management skills. They will work with the team to improve quality of care and development of the service.

The ability to be able to deliver teaching and training sessions to colleagues is also an important part of the role.

In addition, we also have the tri-borough Club Drug Clinic as well as our National Problem Gambling Service. Treatments are provided across all our clinical centres. Clinical Governance framework is well established and the service prides itself in its continuous development towards becoming a learning organisation.
  • Attending the daily medical handover at the WMUH and reporting relevant information into the hospital-based team
  • Providing information on available local services, keeping up to date with new service developments.
  • Providing general information and advice on drug and alcohol use and treatment
  • Completing referral paperwork with service users
  • Meeting referred patients at the appropriate community service to ease the transition
  • Meeting anxious service users at home (in pairs) or an agreed location to bring them into community services
  • Supporting service users through their initial assessment within the community services.
  • Working closing with the Team Coordinator of the community services
  • Working closing with the Alcohol liaison nurse
  • Data entry and record keeping
