We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic organic chemist for a Postdoctoral Research Associate post within the research group of Dr Mattia Silvi (Silvi research group website) based in the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. This is a highly challenging project in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and requires excellent skills in contemporary organic synthesis, demonstrated by your previous publication track record. This is a 12-month fixed post (with a possibility of extension at a later date) and is part of a UKRI funded research building on previous research from the Silvi research group. The project will focus on the development of novel reactions based on photoredox-radical chemistry. The new radical processes will be applied in target synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients and the late-stage functionalisation of complex molecules.

The successful candidate will carry out the following duties:

  • Undertake with high-level of independence and leadership the development of the new methodology and synthesis under the direction of Dr Mattia Silvi
  • Prepare high quality supporting information for publications resulting from the project
  • Co-supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate student projects, as appropriate.

Candidates must:

  • Hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in synthetic organic chemistry
  • Have a proven track record of excellence in synthetic organic chemistry (demonstrated by publication record and ability to develop novel organic chemical reactions)
  • Have excellent organisational, communication and team working skills, and ability to learn new skills and instrumentation
  • Be available to take up the post from 1st of October 2023
  • Previous experience in the field of photoredox catalysis and/or radical chemistry are desirable but not essential

This position is offered on a fixed term contract for 1 year. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours per week). Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates will be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Mattia.Silvi@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
